Community Missions
At First United Methodist, we recognize that some of the most important ministry takes place once we leave our church campus. We have a responsibility to our community - to demonstrate the love of Christ, relieve suffering, and serve our neighbors. Therefore, we offer a number of local outreach ministries to help you make a difference in the world. Here are some of our local community missions:
- Alpha at Bishop Hall
- Bishop Hall Tutoring/Mentoring Ministry
- Backpack Buddies
- Habitat for Humanity
- Helping Hands
- Kairos Prison Ministry
- Lawson Neel Med Bank
- Prayer Shawl Ministry
- Thomas County Food Bank
- Various Christmas Ministries
New Community Missions Initiatives
The following were set as priorities in 2010 and teams of leaders are working on these new Community Missions initiatives (more info to come):
Thomasville Hunger Initiative
We will continue our efforts through the Food Bank and Back Pack Buddies, as well as exploring new ministries and partnerships to make sure that no one in Thomasville goes hungry.
Ministry Resource Hub Initiative
Within Thomasville there are many community resources and ministry efforts by various churches and agencies, but very little communication and coordination of efforts. First Methodist will take the lead in developing a Ministry Resource Hub that will be a ―one stop‖ source of information, connecting needs with resources within our community. This should facilitate greater communication and coordination among Thomasville churches and agencies, making us more effective in serving the needy in our own community.
One-Family-at-a-Time Initiative
Fixing the big social problems in Thomasville like poverty or juvenile delinquency may seem overwhelming, but TFUMC is going to begin making a difference one family at a time. We will do this by carefully choosing one needy family whom we might surround with love and invest in, giving them every opportunity to be successful. Depending upon the family this could include: financial counseling, marriage and family counseling, mentors for their children, assistance in finding stable housing, job training, providing a support system of friends through small groups or Sunday school classes, etc.
